Risk Management as a Design Constraint "How designing for insurability accelerates technology adoption and project success in ocean energy projects."

EVENT DESCRIPTIONThe process of bringing new ocean energy technologies, and the projects that rely upon them to market, is fraught with risk. One means of increasing the probability that a technology is commercialized is by including an additional design constraint, insurability. Ocean energy pioneers who are pragmatic in de-risking their technologies, while also designing for insurability, receive greater support from capital partners, project developers, and supply chain partners. This makes project adoption and subsequent broad industry adoption a much easier. This presentation discusses the relationship between technology development, technology adoption, project development, and insurability in the ocean energy space. The discussion will review the tenants of project risk management: avoiding risk, mitigating risk, accepting risk, and transferring of risk. As well as, how these tenants apply to technologies that are being considered in the offshore shore wind, floating offshore wind, and marine hydrokinetic energy sectors.SPEAKER/PRESENTERBenjamin A. Brown is INpower Global Insurance’s Senior Vice President and Managing Director of the Clean Energy. He has more than 12 years of technology and project development experience in the offshore wind, marine hydro kinetic, aquaculture, and renewable biofuel industries. Prior to becoming an insurance professional, Mr. Brown worked on over $100 million dollars of projects where he consulted with companies on technology commercialization, supply chain entry, and project development needs. He also advises federal agencies, state governments, and independent regulators on the impacts of policy and regulation. Ben has a BA in International Relations from Wheaton College in Norton, MA. As well as a dual master’s degree from the University of Maine at Orono, with a MA in Global Policy and a MS in Resource Economics and Policy.
