Learn about what the TU Delft SNAME student section has been up to recently

SNAME Council Retreat in Washington D.C.

This year marks the first time that the TU Delft SNAME Student Section sent a representative (President Paula) to the SNAME Council Retreat in Washington D.C.  This gathering is organized annually in early June by the SNAME headquarter to provide an opportunity for all branches of the SNAME hierarchy to network, interact, and share ideas.  Key discussion topics included the expansion of the SNAME graduate scholarship program to be more inclusive of European students and the involvement of the various student sections in the annual symposium of the SNAME Western European Section.

However, the retreat wasn't only business.  SNAME members of all ranks competed in a design  challenge where they were tasked to build a boat of basic materials (such as cardboard,  aluminum foil, duct tape, rubber bands, popsicle sticks etc..) which was subjected to some challenging conditions (waves, a puncture of the front compartment, and heavy loading).  Naturally, Paula's team won, most likely due to her prowess analyzing multi-axial fatigue in welded structural details.
  
To remind all participants of their roots, a replica of an old sailing ship, the Hermione, was anchored next to the hotel.



Welcome Our New Vice-Chair: Elouise

The TU Delft SNAME Student Section has recently appointed a new vice-chair, Elouise.  Elouise is currently a master's student of Maritime Technology specializing in Ship Production.  Elousie's main motivation for joining SNAME was to gain the opportunity to get into contact with fellow international marine technology students and professionals. Additionally she is excited to organize activities for students to meet, share, and broaden their knowledge and network. 

Elousie was first introduced to SNAME when she joined a group of TU Delft SNAME students to attend the annual symposium of the Western European Section in London.  

Elouise brings with her a wealth of experience, previously holding a board position in both Froude and the Society of Maritime Technology (TU Delft student organizations focused on broadening the educational experience of students beyond the classroom).  Her intense enthusiasm and strong connections with the TU Delft student body will certainly be an asset for the TU SNAME student section.

 

Students Visit SNAME Annual London Symposium


On October 13-15, six students from the TU Delft SNAME student section attended the Annual Symposium of the SNAME Western European Section in London. The symposium featured four lectures focused on reducing the global environmental impact of the shipping industry and the importance of LNG (both as a cargo and potential fuel source).

The symposium audience was composed of numerous accomplished maritime professionals (including SNAME president Peter Noble) as well as student representatives from University of Strathclyde, University College London, Newcastle University and University of Southampton. Overall, an excellent environment for making new international contacts in the maritime industry.

We would like to thank ABS for sponsoring the symposium and Stena Line for providing the students with round trip tickets aboard the Stena Britannica and Stena Hollandica. Special thanks also goes to the captain of theHollandica for giving a private tour of the bridge (and also for the beer and bitterballen).

 

 

Visit Peter Noble


Peter Noble, current president of SNAME, visited the Netherlands from October 9th - 10th. During his trip, he came to Delft to meet the Dutch students of the newly formed TU Delft SNAME student section.  Peter also shared some of his vast maritime knowledge by giving a short illustrated talk titled "Icebreakers in the Oil Patch", during which he described some of the most influential ship design projects that have taken place in the last fifty years regarding the development of ice breaking project.

In line with other American Presidents, Peter also made time to visit the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, where he experienced some of the finest artwork the Netherlands has to offer. Peter's whilwind tour of Holland ended with a site visit to MARIN, where he toured their state of the art research facilities and also shared his knowledge on how oil companies make their projects. Peter was very impressed with SNAME's recent expansion in the Netherlands and promised to return as soon as he could find time in his busy schedule.


Welcome Our New Chair: Paula

Paula has recently taken over the role of chair of the TU Delft SNAME student section. She recently began a PhD studying multi-axial fatigue in welded structural details in ship and offshore structures and is very enthusiastic about expanding the student section. More information about her project can be found here.

Prior to starting her PhD, Paula graduated Cum Laude from the Delft University of Technology with a MSc in Offshore and Dredging Engineering specializing in Ship and Offshore Structures under Prof. Dr. Ir. Mirek Kaminski. Mirek was so impressed with her work that he decided to keep her as a PhD student. Furthermore, as a strong supporter of SNAME, Mirek decided that Paula would be the perfect candidate to help firmly establish the SNAME student section at TU Delft.

Paula's international experience includes an internship at TOTAL S.A. in Paris, France, where she worked on the development of a Round Robin procedure for the assessment of the criticality of mooring components. This work was done in cooperation with TOTAL S.A, Bureau Veritas and PD Technologies. Later, she also completed her graduation research also at TOTAL S.A. in Paris examining multi-axial fatigue in a turret bearing of an FPSO offloading buoy. During her graduation research she cooperated with National Oilwell Varco in Norway for experimental testing  and got consulted by Ky Dang Van.
