    Jan 16, 12:00 PM - 01:30 PM (NT)
Applications and Research in Maritime Surveillance: Harnessing the Power of Satellite Imagery . EVENT DESCRIPTION The SNAME Canadian Atlantic Section is pleased to kick off 2026 with a virtual presentation on Applications and Research in Maritime Surveillance: Harnessing the Power of Satellite Imagery, delivered by Pamela Burke, GIS Specialist at C-CORE. Join us on Friday, January 9th at 12:00 pm NST as Pamela shares insights from over a decade of experience in satellite data analysis and maritime monitoring. . ABSTRACT Applications and Research in Maritime Surveillance: Harnessing the Power of Satellite Imagery. Maritime surveillance is a critical component of global security, environmental protection, and sustainable ocean governance. Satellite imagery and remote sensing technologies have transformed the way maritime domains are monitored, enabling wide-area, persistent, and cost-effective observation of ocean activities. C-CORE has decades of experience utilizing satellite imagery for a wide range of surveillance services. Capabilities include dark target detection for identifying non-cooperative or AIS-silent vessels, as well as oil slick detection to support rapid response to pollution events and environmental monitoring. Different satellite modalities—particularly optical imagery and synthetic aperture radar (SAR)—play a complementary role in enhancing situational awareness under varying weather and lighting conditions. Satellite-based surveillance provides substantial operational and strategic benefits, including improved detection capability, scalability, and effective integration with existing maritime monitoring systems. By linking research advances with operational applications, satellite imagery continues to reshape maritime surveillance, supporting safer, more secure, and more sustainable use of the world’s . SPEAKER Pamela Burke, GIS Specialist and Order Desk Manager, C-CORE Pamela Burke is a GIS Specialist and the Order Desk Manger at C-CORE in St. John's, NL. With over a decade of experience with C-CORE's Earth Observation team, she brings extensive expertise in satellite data analysis, satellite acquisition coordination, and project management. Through her role she supports routine services, for everything from icebergs to vessel detection. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Biology, an Advanced Diploma in Integrated Coastal and Ocean Management, and a Master of Science in Coastal Zone Management. #VirtualEvent
