Welcome to the SNAME Greek Section Website

Athens April 10, 2021

Statement from the Executive Committee of the Greek Section of the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers.

It is with great sadness that we learnt the death of John Angelicoussis, President and CEO of Angelicoussis Group, controlling the largest privately-owned fleet in the world. The deceased was one of the most influential figures in modern shipping. His close to fifty years career in shipping began when he joined his father Anthony, the founder of the family shipping company. He expanded the business in the tanker sector in 1990 and in the LNG carriers in 2003. Today MARAN GAS has a prominent position worldwide.

We are mourning for his death along with the whole Greek Shipping. He was a great contributor to the strengthening of Greek Shipping with his loyalty to the Greek flag and his support to the maritime education. John Angelicoussis was a great benefactor of our Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers, faithful to his devotion to quality, safety and education of the Shipping world, well-known in the Shipping Family for his integrity in business and his high operating standards.

We offer our warmest condolences to his family and pray with them for the salvation and rest in peace of his soul. We have also unanimously decided to give a scholarship to a deserving student of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering devoted to his memory: “The John Anthony Angelicoussis” scholarship.

Piraeus, 12.04.2017:  A new partnership between the Hellenic Institute of Marine Technology and the Greek Section of the Society of Marine Technology and Marine Engineers set up to strengthen cooperation between the two organizations on their work on promoting advances in marine technology, was today signed by Mr. Michael Matzafos HIMT Chairman and Dr. John Kokkarakis, SNAME Greek Section Chairman.

The Cooperation agreement reaffirms the partnership between the two societies to support each other's activities through sharing information, expertise, and common use of resources to develop joint actions and activities.

Crucially, the partnership will see the two organizations coming together to take action on promoting the concept of creating a Federation of marine societies in order to provide significant influence in the area of international maritime safety, environment and ship operation.

In accepting this award the following was stated:

‘‘Many thanks for this prestigious award, which we accept also on behalf of all members of the Greek Section, who worked hard for its growth.

The Section started back in 2002 with 160 members and now has double that number.

This growth & achievements of the Greek Section were accomplished also because of the support & hospitality provided by the Mr John Angelikousis’ Group of Companies and of the ELKCO Marine Group of Companies, who provide their facilities free of charge for the technical meetings and for office space of the Section and of the SNAME European Regional Office in Paleon Faliron, respectively. Their support is deeply appreciated.’’

The second photo shows the award that was given. It is made mostly of white marble and was designed by an Italian artist.
