Statement from the Executive Committee of the Greek Section of the SNAME

Athens April 10, 2021

It is with great sadness that we learnt the death of John Angelicoussis, President and CEO of Angelicoussis Group, controlling the largest privately-owned fleet in the world. The deceased was one of the most influential figures in modern shipping. His close to fifty years career in shipping began when he joined his father Anthony, the founder of the family shipping company. He expanded the business in the tanker sector in 1990 and in the LNG carriers in 2003. Today MARAN GAS has a prominent position worldwide.

We are mourning for his death along with the whole Greek Shipping. He was a great contributor to the strengthening of Greek Shipping with his loyalty to the Greek flag and his support to the maritime education. John Angelicoussis was a great benefactor of our Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers, faithful to his devotion to quality, safety and education of the Shipping world, well-known in the Shipping Family for his integrity in business and his high operating standards.

We offer our warmest condolences to his family and pray with them for the salvation and rest in peace of his soul. We have also unanimously decided to give a scholarship to a deserving student of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering devoted to his memory: “The John Anthony Angelicoussis” scholarship.
