Dr. N. Adamopoulos studied Physics at the University of Athens and after attending one year funded postgraduate studies at Demokritos National Research Centre, Greece, he moved to the University of Cambridge, UK, where he carried out research leading to a PhD in Applied Superconducivity. His PhD was funded by the British Technology Group and the European Community Research Council as one of the most promising research projects in UK and Europe at the time. His research consisted of developing novel superconductors and testing them at cryogenic conditions. Following one year as Research Assistant in Cambridge, he joined Maran Tankers Management, then Kristen Navigation. He holds a Diploma in Shipping. Since 2012 he has been a member of the Intertanko Documentary Committee. In November 2014 he was promoted to Deputy Operations Manager and in October 2016 to Operations Manager.

MSc, PhD in Health Economics from the Medical School, University of Athens, Ellada. She worked in leadership positions with the MoH, as well as advisor to the Minister in health policy issues. During 2001-2005 served as National Seconded Expert with the World Health Organization, European Office (Copenhagen) in health policy analysis, health systems financing and health workforce development. She has been teaching Health Economics, Public Health and Health Policy for more than 15 years. Actively involved in several research projects. The project “Cross Border Cooperation in Public Health” aiming at monitoring and improvement of cross-border population’s health was listed as a success story in the respective European Commission, DG REGIO web site. Debbie Andrioti has published in various scientific journals. Three of her publications are core references for educational curricula. She is EU expert on health workforce planning and forecasting issues. Debbie initiated and organized a number of international training courses. Her research interests include the impact of working environment on seafarers’ health with a focus on health risk assessment, health profiles, workforce planning and management, and health systems responsiveness to the needs of seagoing employees.

Martina Andrun, Univ. Bacc. Ing. Nav. Arch. earned her bachelor’s degree in 2017 from the University of Split’s Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Naval Architecture, where she is presently enrolled in the second and final year of the Naval Architecture Master’s degree program. She attended the University of Rijeka between 2016 and 2017.

Dionysios Antonopoulos is a Naval Architect & Marine engineer, currently holding the position of the General Manager, Marine Solutions Sales in Wärtsilä Greece. Mr. Antonopoulos worked for 5 years in Wärtsilä Switzerland, in the department of marketing and new building projects and then appointed as Portfolio Manager for 2-stroke engines, still within Wärtsilä Switzerland, where he worked with major Korean and Chinese shipyards supporting various aspects of vessel propulsion and engine development. Mr. Antonopoulos returned to Greece as Technical Manager for 2-stroke engines responsible for Greece and Cyprus and then appointed to the current holding position. Prior to Wärtsilä he worked for a shipping company, and possesses seagoing experience.

Alexander Artikis is an Assistant Professor of Computing in the Department of Maritime Studies of the University of Piraeus, His research interests lie in the areas of Artificial Intelligence and Distributed Systems. He has published over 80 papers in top journals and conferences of these fields.

Vanda Brandic, Univ. Bacc. Ing. Nav. Arch. earned her bachelor’s degree  from the Faculty of Engineering, University of Rijeka in 2016, and is presently enrolled in the second and final year of the Master’s Degree program in Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering. She presented the paper “PWBS Best Practice Analysis of Two Shipyards” at the Seventh Conference on Marine Technology - Winkler in November, 2017, which received high acclaim from top shipyard management. She is also Vice-Chairperson of the first SNAME Student section in Croatia, a very active member who among many other things prepared the SNAME student By-Laws for the University of Rijeka.

Jörg Brunswig finished his studies of naval architecture at Hamburg University of Technology in 2004. From 2005 to 2006 he worked at Germanischer Lloyd as a CFD engineer. In 2007 he joined the research team of Prof. Rung at TUHH to be part of the FreSCo+ development team and do research in the scope of different national and EU-funded projects. His main task was the implementation of the overset grids technique to simulate complex flows around multiple bodies with relative motion. From 2013 to 2015 he worked for Flensburger Schiffbau-Gesellschaft as a CFD and development engineer. Since September 2015 he is working for the CFD department of HSVA.

Stefanos Chatzinikolaou is responsible for Research & Innovation activities as well as for training activities of RINA Class Society, in Greece and Cyprus He holds a diploma from the School of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering of the National Technical University of Athens, Greece (NTUA). He has an experience of more than ten years as research engineer in the Laboratory for Maritime Transport of NTUA being involved in European and international funded research projects, in non-funded research. He has also been involved in teaching in the undergraduate program of the NTUA, and in professional training in areas such as Ship Environmental Performance, Energy Efficiency, Maritime Safety, and Human Factors. In his PhD studies he elaborated methodologies for the environmental impact analysis of ships from a life cycle perspective. Results of his research work have been published in academic books and journals and reported in peer reviewed international conferences. He is involved in the RINA experts’ team responsible for developing the system for competence management of onboard and ashore personnel.

Dionysia Chroni is a research engineer and PhD candidate at the Ship Design Laboratory of the National Technical University of Athens. Her research activity is focused on the simulation of maneuvering of ships in adverse weather conditions.

Ms. Damianidou is a Naval Architect and Marine Engineer (NTUA, Greece) and she is currently pursuing her Master of Engineering Management degree at Duke University (USA). Prior to her graduate education she worked at Lloyd’s Register as a Technical Specialist in the Business Development team. During her professional experience she was involved into consultancy projects on energy efficiency measures, forthcoming legislations and innovative projects. She was deeply involved in special projects like POSEIDON MED (I & II) whose objective is to develop and facilitate the adoption of LNG as a fuel in the Eastern Mediterranean area from a regulatory, technical (port infrastructure, vessels’ retrofitting and new buildings) and financial perspective.

Prof. Roko Dejhalla, PhD., Nav. Arch., is a full professor at the Faculty of Engineering, University of Rijeka. For many years he is a Head of the Department of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering. He teaches courses related to the ships resistance and propulsion and building of small craft and his research activities take place within the scientific area of naval architecture, in particular the marine hydrodynamics (ship resistance and propulsion). Roko Dejhalla is a mentor of two student projects: “RITEH Waterbike Team” and “Adria Hydrofoil Team”.

George Dimopoulos is a Principal Specialist in DNVGL and Manager of the Maritime R&D and Advisory unit in Piraeus, Greece. His field of expertise is the modeling and optimization of complex ship machinery systems, including gas and LNG carriers. He is lead researcher or project manager in various R&D, ship concept design and advisory projects. George and his team aim at fusing forefront research methods and process modeling techniques to optimize ship systems for improved performance, safety, fuel savings, emissions reductions and cost-effectiveness, in practice. He holds a PhD. Degree Marine Engineering and a Diploma in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering both from National Technical University of Athens (Greece). George has authored or co-authored more than 35 peer-reviewed papers in scientific conferences and journals.

Stefanos Gkouveris is a post-graduate student in Maritime Studies (M.Sc.) at the University of Piraeus and a partner at Horizon P.C., a company that operates in the field of new technological applications in maritime industry. He obtained his B.Eng at the Piraeus University of Applied Sciences, Greece, in 2010. During 2007 - 2017 he was affiliated with the maritime industry working as Sales Engineer and ICT assistant in several companies. His current objective is to merge his experience in maritime and ICT sector by managing and developing innovative technological mediums for the maritime community.

Stefan Harries is managing director and co-founder of FRIENDSHIP SYSTEMS AG, his focus being Management, Strategies and R&D. He is a graduate of Naval Architecture from TU Berlin (Diplom-Ingenieur in 1992, PhD in 1998). He holds a BSc in Mechanical Engineering (TU Darmstadt, 1988) and an MSE from the University of Michigan (1990). Stefan Harries is associated with the Technical University Berlin as external lecturer for Simulation-driven Design. He looks back at more than 25 years of experience in the design and operation of marine systems. As scientist and researcher he has published extensively in the field of parametric modeling and optimization.

Dimos Iliopoulos is a diplomed Naval Architect & Marine Engineer graduated in 1977 from the “National Technical University of Athens” (NTUA) and having more than 40 years in Shipping and Ship-building Industries, having worked in various Greek, other European and Far East shipyards.

He has also worked in various Greek and American Shipping Companies in different managerial positions and he has direct involvement for the design / construction / supervision / testing / deliveries of about ninety (90) merchant and naval vessels (various types and sizes).

He is also a Member of different Greek and foreign Institutions / Associations, including Greek Chamber of Engineers, Hellenic Institute of Marine Technology, Association of Marine Technical Managers, HELMEPA, etc., being also Member of the Technical Committees of 3 major Classification Societies.

Dimos Iliopoulos has issued and presented numerous training courses and seminars for above Organizations / Associations and Marine Academies of Class Societies (in Athens / Piraeus, Istanbul and Shanghai) for different technical issues and news / developments of Shipping and Ship-building Industries.

Marios Ioannou is a Principal Engineer with the American Bureau of Shipping, in the Corporate Technology department, and holds a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering with a focus on internal combustion engines. Prior to that, Dr. Ioannou worked for many years for a number of engine manufacturers. In his last role, with Winterthur Gas and Diesel (Wärtsilä) in Switzerland, he was an expert in the engine performance department and was involved in the development of the combustion systems of diesel and dual fuel engines, with focus on both the diesel and Otto cycles. He was also the Performance Leader during shop tests and Type approval tests at licensee sites and sea trials in China, Korea and Japan.

Doroteja Jaki, Univ. Bacc. Ing. Nav. Arch. earned her bachelor’s degree in 2017 from the Faculty of Engineering, University of Rijeka, and is presently enrolled in the second and final year of the Master’s Degree program in Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering. She is the Secretary/Treasurer of the first SNAME Student Section in Croatia. Involved in a plethora of SNAME activities, she significantly contributes to the promulgation of the SNAME student chapter at the University of Rijeka, such as Poster development and expert advice.

Olaf Chresten Jensen, medical doctor, specialist in occupational and community medicine with a Master of Public Health (MPH) from the University of Aarhus. Has since 1992 been a researcher at the Center for Maritime Health and Society (CMSS), Department of Public Health, University of Southern Denmark. Over the years he has initiated an completed several epidemiological studies of occupational and health among seafarers, fishermen and off-shore workers and is the author of numerous scientific articles and reports from these studies. Thus, in almost 25 years he has been engaged in planning, implementing and publish similar studies which this application is all about. From 1999-2007 he was head of an international study based on questionnaires about health and safety and health with about 6500 sailors from 10 countries, which resulted in numerous international publications. Since then he continued with different areas of maritime health research and publications.

Nikolaos Kakalis is the Technology & Projects Manager of Consolidated Marine Management Inc., being responsible for energy and performance management and the uptake of new technologies by CMM. Prior to joining CMM, Nikos was the DNV GL Manager for R&D and Advisory services in Piraeus (2008-2017) with significant experience, among others, in the development and implementation of computer-based tools and services for the assessment, simulation, and optimisation of integrated ship machinery systems with respect to energy efficiency, emissions, costs, and safety. He holds a PhD in Chemical Engineering and an MSc in Process Systems Engineering from Imperial College London, as well as a Diploma in Metallurgical Engineering from the National Technical University of Athens. His work has resulted in over 40 refereed journal and conference proceedings publications. .

Nikolaos Kampantais is a qualified lawyer and legal consultant within the field of marine and international trade law. He obtained a Law Degree from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (2014) and graduated with Distinction from the LL.M. in Maritime and Transport Law of the Erasmus University of Rotterdam (2016). He is a young researcher in Maritime Law who is presently formulating his research question to undertake PhD research in the field of Marine Insurance Law at the Department of Shipping, Trade and Transport of the University of Aegean. He is based in Rotterdam (the Netherlands) and is a member of the Contracting Legal department of ABN AMRO Bank.

Aphrodite Kanellopoulou studied at the School of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering of the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA), Greece. 

She is currently a PhD student at the School of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering, while for the last three years she has been working as a research engineer at the Ship Design Laboratory of NTUA, having participated in three major European Projects.  

Her main research interests are related to parametric ship design and optimization, ship safety, marine hydrodynamic performance and computational fluid dynamics, machine learning and artificial neural networks.  

George Kapetanis was born in Athens, Greece on May 5^th, 1956.
He attended the German School of Athens and in 1976 he began studying at the Department of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering of the Technical University of Hannover. In 1983 he got his diploma in Marine and Mechanical Engineering from the above University with a specialization in Marine Diesel Engines. He has further pursued graduate studies the School of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering (NA&ME) of the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA).

He has worked for over 30 years in different areas of marine engineering including shipyards, shipping companies but also academic institutions. He is currently continuing his research activities at Department of Maritime Transport of the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA). He is being involved with research activities mainly in the field of Marine Emissions, Environmental and Safety.

Elias Kariambas is Director, Global Ships Systems Centre in ABS, based in Piraeus. He joined ABS in 2012, as Technology and Business Development Manager for the Eastern Region in Europe. Prior joining ABS, Dr. Kariambas worked for 17 years as an Engineer and Manager at the plan approval office of Bureau Veritas in Piraeus. He graduated from National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) as a Naval Architect - Marine Engineer, holding also a Ph.D. in Ship Design from NTUA, as well as an MSc in Business Administration from the Athens University of Economics and Business (AUEB).

John Kokarakis is a graduate in Naval Architecture & Marine Engineering from National Technical University of Athens (1979). He also holds graduate degrees from the University of Michigan (MSE 83, MSE 84 and PhD 86). His doctoral dissertation was in the design of marine risers for oil exploration and production in very deep water. He worked in various projects worldwide as a consultant and technical investigator of maritime accidents and failures. Some of the most notorious were the explosion of Space Shuttle Challenger, the grounding of Exxon Valdez, the explosion and fire of Piper Alpha, the capsize of drillship Sea-Crest in the Gulf of Thailand and others. Furthermore, he was a consultant of Sea-Land, American President Lines and Matson Navigation for numerous aspects of containership design, operation and repair. He has extensive experience in ship design and operations, spanning over forty years.

He is currently working at Bureau Veritas in charge of technical development. His work focuses on the implementation of the “green” regulations with specialization in fuel saving techniques, energy efficiency and speed optimization, hydrodynamic optimization, resistance and propulsion, performance monitoring, ship design, machinery and safety, education and training, asset integrity management and alternative fuels.

Prof. Damir Kolich, PhD., Nav. Arch., is an Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Engineering, University of Rijeka. He has been a member of SNAME since 1992 and was graduated from Webb Institute in New York in 1996. After working in the sales and design departments of various Croatian shipyards, he enrolled in the University of Rijeka Naval Architecture Department as a Teaching Assistant in 2008, where he earned his PhD in 2011. His specialties are lean manufacturing, design for production and data mining in shipbuilding. He is the Faculty Head of the SNAME Student Section at the University of Rijeka, first one in Croatia. He also assists the student “RITEH Waterbike Team”.

Theo Kourmpelis is an Electrical & Computer Engineering from National Technical University of Athens. He had the role of researcher in the School of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering with his active participation in a handful of projects associated with Marine Electrical Engineering (namely Defkalion-Thales, MARINELIVE and DC-Ship). He also worked for the American Bureau of Shipping in the corporate offshore technology department dealing with unconventional design arrangements (DC Distribution, Energy Storage Systems etc). His current role from the beginning of 2017, is with Lloyd’s Register in Piraeus dealing with the implementation of Special Projects such as ELEMED. He is an author/co-author of 9 technical papers in the field of marine electrical engineering technology.

Research engineer Dimitrios Liarokapis is a member of the scientific staff of the Laboratory for Ship and Marine Hydrodynamics of NTUA, working on the design and conduction of experiments for laboratory and in-situ measurements. He is a mechanical, with research work of 15 years in the area of experimental ship & marine hydrodynamics and especially in flow field measurements. Over these years he has developed measuring techniques for towing tank measurements in the following fields: PIV, Pitot Tubes, Free Surfaced Measurements, Resistance Tests, Motion Capture and Performance of Sailing Yachts, Flat Plate Tests, Open Water and Self-Propulsion Experiments etc.

Dr. Elizabeth Lindstad holds a PhD in Naval Architecture from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), and a MSc. degree in Industrial Economy from the Norwegian Institute of Technology (NTH). Elizabeth is a SNAME member and holds the grade of Fellow. She works as a Senior Scientist at the SINTEF OCEAN AS (MARINTEK) in Trondheim. Her scientific strength is the ability to combine naval architecture, technical knowledge, and economics with LCA knowledge as demonstrated through her doctoral thesis: Strategies and Measures for Reducing Maritime CO₂ Emissions. Before joining research, she worked 10 years out in the industry within the fields of manufacturing, purchasing and logistics. Elizabeth has published in good journals and has been a regular contributor to SMC, the annual conferences of SNAME. She also frequently written articles for the maritime newspapers and magazines such as TradeWinds, Maritime Technology and Bunkerspot.

Dr. Liu is a senior researcher of the Ship Design Laboratory of National Technical University of Athens. He received his PhD in simulation of nonlinear ship motions from the Ship Design Laboratory and has worked in a number of large scale European Union-funded research projects. His scientific interests fall into applied and numerical ship hydrodynamics, covering the fields of seakeeping, stability, maneuvering, ship safety, and their impact on the optimization of ship design and operation.

Lt. Commander Georgios V. Lykos is an engineer for the Hellenic Navy and currently he is the Director of Damage Control School for the Hellenic Navy that manages full realistic navy and maritime firefighting, flooding and evacuation simulators. Lt. Lykos is also a PhD Candidate in the Laboratory for Maritime Transport at the School of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering of the National Technical University of Athens, Greece. Lt. Lykos’s expertise is in marine safety and security; risk engineering; human reliability (incl. human centered design); marine casualty investigation; naval design; resilience engineering; systems engineering; firefighting; and statistical modeling. He has published and presented his work in many highly esteemed scientific journals and conferences. Lt. Lykos holds Master in Science in “Human Resources Management” from Athens University of Economy and Business and Master of Science in “Nautical and Sea Technology and Science” from National Technical University of Athens, Greece.

Dimitrios V. Lyridis is an Associate Professor in the area of Maritime Transport in the School of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering (NA&ME) at the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA). He is currently Head of the Laboratory for Maritime Transport (LMT) of NTUA. He has a Diploma (1987) in NA&ME from NTUA (1987), an M.S. (1990) in NA&ME (Marine Systems Management) from the University of Michigan (UM), an M.S.E. (1990) in Industrial and Operations Engineering (IOE) from UM, and a Ph.D. (1990) in NA&ME from UM as well. His main scientific areas of interest are maritime economics and logistics, shipping finance, maritime transportation and energy. He has undertaken a large number of research projects in maritime transport, shipping finance, and energy (including cost benefit analyses for investment projects) and he has been involved in applied commercial projects in the areas of ship investment, restructuring, marketing, business and operational planning (including feasibility studies and business plans) for Small and Medium Enterprises (SME’s) in the EU and in developing countries.

Darin Majnaric, Univ. Bacc. Ing. Nav. Arch. earned his bachelor’s degree  from the Faculty of Engineering, University of Rijeka in 2017. Presently he is in the second and final year of the Naval Architecture Master’s degree program at the same institution. Darin has been the team leader of the “RITEH Waterbike Team” for over a year and has been a member since his undergraduate years. Likewise, Darin has been an active student member of SNAME since 2017.

Ivor Majnaric is an undergraduate student at the Faculty of Engineering, University of Rijeka. He is enrolled in the third year mechanical engineering program and plans to enter the Master’s degree program and specialize in marine engineering. Ivor has been a student member of SNAME since 2017 and also a member of the “RITEH Waterbike Team” since 2016, where his main contribution is the design of a management and propulsion system.

Vasiliki Margari holds a diploma in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering from National Technical University of Athens (NTUA). She is interested in continuing research in this field. The paper presented in this conference is her first research experience and is related to her diploma thesis under the same title. This project enhanced her programming skills and broadened her knowledge regarding artificial neural networks. She was also part of Oceanos team, which represents NTUA in the international student competition dedicated to naval energy efficiency, HydroContest, as a member of the Design sub team. Josip Lino Novak, Univ. Bacc. Ing. Nav. Arch. earned his bachelor’s degree from the Faculty of Engineering, University of Rijeka in 2016, and is presently enrolled in the second and final year of the Master’s Degree program in Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering at the University of Rijeka. As Chairperson of the first SNAME Student section in Croatia, he attended the SNAME Maritime Convention held in Houston in 2017, where he networked with other SNAME student members, especially with those of the parent SNAME Greek section.

Research engineer Evangelos Papakonstantinou is a member of the scientific staff of the Laboratory for Ship and Marine Hydrodynamics of NTUA, working on the design and conduction of experiments for laboratory and in-situ measurements. He is a Naval Architect & Marine Eng. NTUA, with research work of 18 years in the area of computational and experimental ship & marine hydrodynamics and especially in resistance, self propulsion test and computational calculations for bare hulls. Over these years he has developed measuring techniques for towing tank measurements in the following fields: Open Water and Self-Propulsion Experiments etc.

Christos Papaleonidas studied Mechanical Engineering in the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA), Greece. He is currently a MSc student and a PhD Candidate at the School of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering, NTUA conducting research on "LNG Supply Chain Modelling and Optimization through Blockchain Application". He participates as a research engineer of the Laboratory Maritime Transport, in multiple European-Funded Projects focusing on Shipping and Energy.  His main research interests are related to economic and managerial issues of maritime operations, maritime supply chain management focusing on the LNG value chain and blockchain technology.

Apostolos D. Papanikolaou studied Naval Architecture & Marine Engineering at the Technical University of Berlin (Germany). He was Professor and Head of the Ship Design Laboratory of the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) for more than 30 years. As of October 1, 2016, he is Senior Scientific Advisor of HSVA. He headed more than 75 funded research projects and was author/co-author of over 570 scientific publications dealing with the design and optimization of conventional and unconventional vessels, the hydrodynamic analysis and assessment of the calm water performance and the performance of ships in seaways, the logistics-based ship design, the stability and safety of ships and related regulatory developments of the International Maritime Organization. He received various international prize awards for his research work and scientific contributions to ship hydrodynamics, innovative ship design and safety assessment, lately the Lloyds List 2009 Greek Shipping award on technical innovation in tanker design (jointly with Germanischer Lloyd), the prestigious Dr. K. Davidson medal/award of SNAME for outstanding achievement in ship research in 2010 and the European Champions Award for Senior Researchers in Waterborne Transport in 2014. He is Fellow of RINA, SNAME, STG and JASNAOE and International Vice President of SNAME.

He has  graduated from the National Technical University of Athens as a Naval Architect and Marine Engineer. He did an internship at the Germanischer Lloyd, where he was familiarized with the regulations of classification societies and the program POSEIDON ND. He worked for 2 years at the Technical Department of Gas Log LNG Services L.t.d. as an Asset Integrity Engineer. After his service at Hellenic Army Land Forces he founded the company PIPOL for IT Technical Support & Solutions. He has been a SNAME member since 2006 and a founding member of the SNAME NTUA Student Section. He served as a Secretary of the NTUA student section over the period 2009-2010. He has advanced computer and electronic skills.

Yanna Pavlopoulou is the Founder and Managing Partner of CommonLawgic (www.commonlawgic.org ) a non-profit Research Institute that offers legal, strategic and project management support over sustainability reporting, ESG metrics, waste and resource efficiency. Being a lawyer (Athens Bar) until 2014, Yanna specialized in shipping, corporate and civil law. She was General Counsel and BoD member at Hellenic Star Shipping Co., trained Sustainability Report Verifier on behalf of Lloyd’s Register Marine (2011), Assessor on Excellence Management Models (UN GRI Standards, AA1000, E.F.Q.M Marine), and is a CSR Practitioner. She is a PhD candidate at NTUA Environmental Economics & Sustainability Unit, holds an MSc from Liverpool JMU (School of Engineering) in Shipping Management, and has attended the Post-Graduate Level Program TRAIN MOS II (in Maritime Sustainability, LNG and Supply Chain Management). She received her Master of Laws degree from Georgetown University (with full scholarship), and her Law Degree from Athens (Arista). Yanna was the elected General Secretary of PROPELLER (PIRAEUS) CLUB (2013-2015) and a member of SNAME, WISTA, EEDE etc. She is currently Steering Team member of the nationwide cleanup campaign, Let’s Do It Greece (www.letsdoitgreece.org), the Coordinator of ALUMNI HUB (a network platform of Greek graduates from prominent foreign Universities), and the President of the Georgetown Alumni Club of Greece. 

Mark Penfold holds the position of Manager with the American Bureau of Shipping, in the Corporate Marine Technology department. Based in London, his role involves evaluating emerging engine, emissions and fuel related technologies, evaluating regulatory compliance issues and engaging in relevant industry and academic forums. Mark has been the project team leader for the ABS Guide for Propulsion and Auxiliary Systems for Gas Fueled Ships, the ABS Guide for LNG Bunkering and the ABS Guide for Exhaust Emission Abatement. He is also the IACS representative for the development of the IGF Code at IMO and Rapporteur for the EUs ESSF sub group on exhaust gas cleaning systems. Prior to joining ABS, Mark was lead development engineer for a heavy duty diesel engine manufacturer focusing on performance, durability and emissions testing of 2-stage turbocharging and emissions aftertreatment technologies. Mark holds a First Class Honours Degree in Mechanical Engineering and is a Charted Engineer with the Institute of Mechanical Engineers.

Vasileios G. Petropoulos is a Naval Architect and Marine Engineer, studied in the National Technical University of Athens. His interests are in risk based and human centered design in addition to the classical fields of Naval Engineering. He has collaborated with the Hellenic Navy’s Damage Control School in projects referring to safety management and human factors, as a researcher engineer.

In the past four years, Dr. Kees Pieters has been at the forefront of new innovations In the maritime industry, as research professor at Research Centre Sustainable PortCity.  

With a background in electrotechnical engineering, computer science and  artificial intelligence, Dr. Pieters understands the technological capabilities and limitations of this new technology, but his PhD research in Humanistics on complex systems and complexity thinking has been vital in looking beyond the hypes, and see the societal impact of robotics and machine learning, and appreciate the human factor in these new developments.

Timoleon Plessas is a research engineer and PhD candidate at the Ship Design Laboratory of the National Technical University of Athens. His research activity is focused on the optimization of ship's design and operational aspects. More specifically, it is focused on the development of life-cycle optimization methodologies that take into account the whole life of a vessel and include both design and operational aspects in the optimization process (holistic optimization).

 Alexandros K. Rammos is a Naval architecture and Marine engineering student in the National Technical University of Athens. His interests are in marine safety, safety management and the human element. Mr. Rammos is currently taking his first steps in research projects on accident investigation. He has collaborated with the Hellenic Navy’s Damage Control School as a research engineer and thence forward continues to conduct research on safety management.

Spiros Rossopoulos has a bachelor’s degree in Marine and Offshore Engineering from Plymouth University dated 1984, while he also holds an HND in Naval Architecture from Sunderland Polytechnic (1982). He also got his Master's Degree in International Shipping from Plymouth University in 1986. During his military duties from 1986 to 1988 he served at Hellenic Navy General Staff, in the Design office of the Hellenic Navy Landing crafts and in the Study office for the acquisition of frigates. In 1988 he joined Troodos Shipping as a Superintendent Engineer supervising repairs of a fleet of 7 VLCC's for 5 years. Subsequently he was promoted to R&D Manager while he outfitted 54 Tankers with Satellite communications and designed Troodos's Software System. In 1992 he started his own business, Relational Development Systems SA, focused on Maritime Asset Management. Supported by Troodos and financing development work from successfully delivering 3 large publicsector Subcontract works, he then focused efforts on providing a comprehensive integrated maritime asset management platform. His company was later evolved to Vector Marine Informatics SA, under the umbrella of Alfa Trust Innovation. In 2005 Vector Marine Informatics was acquired by a large traditional shipping group as Vector Marine Software Ltd. Spiros, committed to innovation and advanced management control systems, currently is Managing Vector Maritime Software, evolving an integrated workflow-based system ranging from Financial, Technical, Procurement, Seagoing and Office Personnel Management and Payroll, Operation and e-charts, to Message and Document management. In 2015 he endeavored to further complement the platform with a Telemetry, Performance and Predictive analytics subsystem.

Ing. Ines Simic started as a student at the Rotterdam University of Applied Science taking on one of the hardest assignments at the Research Centre Sustainable Portcity. She graduated winning the Bachelor Award as the best research work of 2017. Due to her passion towards the maritime industry she has dedicated the last three years working to an underwater sound radar. Her interests focus on signal processing, sensors, artificial intelligence and machine learning.

Mihovil Tomašić, Univ. Mag. Ing. Nav. Arch. earned his master’s degree in 2017 from the Faculty of Engineering, University of Rijeka. Presently he is employed in “3. Maj” shipyard and is performing duties as a consultant for the “RITEH Waterbike Team”.

Researcher John Trahanas is a member of the scientific staff of the Laboratory for Ship and Marine Hydrodynamics of NTUA, working on the design and conduction of experiments for laboratory and in-situ measurements. He is an Electronics & Electrical Technician, with research work of 21 years in the area of experimental ship & marine hydrodynamics and especially in the towing tank measurements. Over these years he has developed and contacted measuring techniques for towing tank measurements in the following fields: Free Surfaced Measurements, Resistance Tests, Dynamic Behavior of ship models, Performance of Sailing Yachts, Flat Plate Tests, Open Water and Self-Propulsion Experiments etc.

Antonis Trakakis holds the position of Technical Manager at Arista Shipping. He is responsible for the technical management of a young fleet of bulk carriers. As Technical and Environmental Manager of Superfast Ferries he successfully addressed all issues relevant to operation of ships in sensitive areas like the Baltic Sea. He has worked with all kinds of internal combustion engines, ranging from gas turbines, to all sizes of 4-stroke and 2-stroke engines, and one of his special concerns has been the formation and control of emissions, and engine efficiency.

Vasileios Tsarsitalidis got his Master's degree in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering in 2008 (third of class) from the School of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering of the National Technical University of Athens and while doing his PhD (in the same school) he also got a master's degree in computational mechanics in 2010. In January 2015 he got his PhD in Marine Hydrodynamics and Propulsion and more specifically in non- conventional (biomimetic) propulsion. Meanwhile, he was an Assistant tutoring for the courses of "Ship Resistance and Propulsion", "Propeller Design" and "Mathematical Modelling of Lifting Flows" for 6 consecutive years. During the last years of the PhD he was also involved in several commercial projects, including performance prediction of energy saving devices, trim optimizations and propeller retrofits. In 2015 Vasileios did his mandatory service in the Hellenic Navy where he served as a 3rd class petty officer in a Frigate for six months. Then was transferred to the Navy Logistics Command where he served as secretary deputy to the Chief Engineer of the fleet, from where he was discharged with honors for the development of loadicator software for the S-class frigates and consulting services.
Currently, Vasileios is Ship Performance Engineer in Vector Marine Software, where he leads the development of performance module, works on the unification of shipboard systems and provides consulting services for newbuildings (plan approval, tank tests and sea trials) and retrofits. In SNAME, Vasileios has been a member since 2007, founder and first chair of the NTUA Greek Student section, and is now the YP Chair of Greek Section, while he also volunteers as the Webmaster of the Section.

Dr. B.S. Tselentis has a background in chemistry (BSc) and biochemistry (MSc., PhD., University of London UK.) and has specialised in environmental monitoring of atmospheric and marine pollutants. He is an Environmental Management Systems Lead Auditor (ISO 14001) and coordinates research projects on measurements of basic pollutants in water and air, as well as developing novel analytical chemistry methodologies. He heads the Marine Sciences Laboratory of the Maritime Studies Department of the University of Piraeus and his research interests also lie in the area of environmental management of harbour and port operations with projects on Waste Management Plan Development and Port Environmental Certification Systems. He regularly advises on Environmental Impact Assessment for port and marina development plans.

George D. Tzabiras has a diploma on Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering (NTUA, 1975) and a diploma on Mechanical Engineering (NTUA, 1978). He received his PhD from the Department of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering (NAME) of NTUA in 1984. Since 1985 he has been a member of the academic staff and since 1997 a full professor in the School of NAME in the area of Ship Hydrodynamics (resistance and propulsion of ships). Over the period 2001-2003 he was elected as the President in the same School and since 2005 he has been the Director of the Laboratory for Ship and Marine Hydrodynamics of NTUA. His research activities cover the areas of experimental and computational hydrodynamics and he is the author or co-author of more than 90 research publications in refereed journals and conferences. He has participated either as the scientific responsible or as the main researcher in more than forty research projects supported by national or EEC funds.

Dr. Tzannatos graduated from the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture of Portsmouth University, UK, in 1982. He obtained an MSc degree in Marine Engineering from University College London in 1983 and he completed his PhD on turbomachinery research at Cranfield University, UK, in 1986. He then worked at the Department of Mechanical Engineering of Imperial College London, as a post-doc research assistant on turbocharger research. In 1991, he joined the Department of Maritime Studies in the University of Piraeus - Greece, where he is currently a professor of Maritime Technology and the Dean of the School of Maritime and Industrial Studies. His scientific and research interests are mainly in the area of technology in shipping and its impact upon shipping productivity, safety and pollution prevention.

Dr. Nikolaos P. Ventikos is an Associate Professor in the Laboratory for Maritime Transport at the School of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering of the National Technical University of Athens, Greece. Dr Ventikos’ expertise is in marine safety; risk engineering; (oil) marine pollution; human reliability (incl. human centered design, non-technical skills); marine casualty investigation; resilience engineering; systems engineering; offshore and environmental risk; and statistical modeling. He has published and presented his work in many highly esteemed scientific journals such as Ocean Engineering, Reliability Engineering and System Safety, Marine Pollution Bulletin etc and in more than 100 scientific conferences. Dr. Ventikos was awarded the G.P. Livanos Grand Prize on Environmental Issues sponsored by the Hellenic Chamber of Shipping (2000). Dr. Ventikos is very fluent in English and French and he has basic knowledge of Arabic.

Emmanouil Vergetis is currently responsible for Lloyd’s Register’s Consulting Services in South Europe, including Greece and Cyprus. His work focuses on the implementation of new technologies in shipping, data & digital, fuel saving techniques, RCM and CBM Maintenance Techniques along with his involvement in Electric and Hybrid projects and Shore Power projects. He is a graduate of National Technical University of Athens and holds a degree of Naval & Mechanical Engineer. He was also academically dedicated in Oil Spill Confrontation both in his thesis but also as a PhD candidate and scientific researcher in European projects. He has served in various positions in Marine Industry and has also gained extensive experience in engineering, supervision and construction of Electro-Mechanical and Renewable Energy projects.

Prof. George N. Zaraphonitis received his Diploma and his PhD from the School of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering of the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA). He worked for the Eleusis Shipyards from 1993 to 1994 and from 1994 to 1998 he joined the Marine Technology Development Company (MARTEDEC S.A.). In 1998 he was elected Assistant Professor in the School of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering, NTUA, where he serves until today. He participated in more than twenty national or EU-funded research projects on the design and optimization of conventional and unconventional vessels, the analysis and optimization of the hydrodynamic performance and safety of ships in intact and damaged condition. Results from this work have been presented in more than eighty scientific publications.

Anastasios Zetos was born on 1990 in Athens acquired his MEng from the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Aeronautics, University of Patras (2013) and his MSc in Naval and Marine Technology and Science from the School of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering, NTUA (2017). Anastasios is an experienced marine engineering professional and currently works as an Assistant Superintendent Engineer for Chartworld Shipping Corporation at Korea.
