About Our Section

The Newport News Apprentice School Student Section of SNAME is unique in that we are not a traditional 4 year college. We are backed by our parent company - Newport News Shipbuilding - and each and every student member is also a full time shipbuilder. With our unique position, our focus is on helping to inspire future generations of shipbuilder and designers as we can.

The Apprentice School Student Section of SNAME hosts an annual Boat Design Competition for area high schools to compete in. High school students design a boat to be able to navigate a course of some design, as well as perform some function as designated when rules and guidelines are issued for the competition. The top four of these designs are built by apprentices at Newport News Shipbuilding, and compete at an event hosted by our section.

This upcoming year we are working on increasing the breadth of our reach, to help other students in other areas to participate in the professional maritime community.

Newport News Shipbuilding History

Newport News Shipbuilding has existed in one shape or another since 1886. Currently the only shipyard with the capability to build, overhaul, and fuel United States Navy aircraft carriers, and one of two shipyards to build United States Navy Submarines.

The facility encompasses over 550 acres with a linear distance from end to end of over two miles, and contains some of the largest cranes in the western hemisphere used to build the most complex ships in the world.

Newport News Shipbuilding has built more than 800 ships in its tenure, and continues to build quality ships.

Newport News Apprentice School History

Newport News Apprentice School was founded not much longer after the shipyard itself - in 1919 - and is one of the top apprentice programs in the nation. The school provides an opportunity for prospective students to learn a skilled trade while going to school simultaneously, rotating frequently between work locations to learn as much about the process of building the most complex ships in the world, as well as grow their knowledge within their trade.

Apprentices have the ability to continue into advanced track programs where they are able to continue the work and school schedule towards an associates degree in relevant majors for shipbuilding.

The Apprentice School promotes a set of core values for students - integrity, responsibility, honesty, performance, and engagements. These core values held by all apprentices creates an skilled, willing, able, intelligent, and creative workforce for today and for the future of the shipbuilding industry.
