2019 Boat Design Competition

The Apprentice School Student Section of SNAME hosted their 12th annual SNAME Boat Design Competition in May.  This year's competition scenario challenged teams to design a pirate ship capable of carrying cannonballs.  The winning team was Reel Boat Hours from West Springfield High School.

 

2014 Boat Design Competition

The Apprentice School Student Section of SNAME hosted their 7th annual SNAME Boat Design Competition in May.  This year's competition scenario challenged teams to design a ferry capable of carrying channels of bricks representing cars.  The winning team was Aboat Time from Jamestown High School.

 

2013 Webb Trip

Some members of the student section traveled to Webb Institute in Long Island, NY in October for a tour of the college, including a demonstration of the model basin (i.e. wave tank).  Since the trip took a drive up the east drive, the student section took a detour in Delaware to visit the lightship Overfalls, an oil cleanup vessel, and a combination tour/ride on the Cape May-Lewes ferry (which had been overhauled at Newport News Shipbuilding).

 

2013 Boat Design Competition

The Apprentice School Student Section of SNAME hosted their 6th annual SNAME Boat Design Competition in May.  This year's competition scenario challenged teams to design a tug boat capable of pushing/pulling a tug.  The winning team was Deck Hands from York High School.

 

2013 Boat Design Competition Luncheon

The Apprentice School Student Section of SNAME hosted their 6th annual SNAME Boat Design Competition luncheon in March.  Participating sponsors and high schoolers attended a presentation announcing this year's finalists at The Apprentice School gymnasium.  The finalists are Deck Hands (York High School), Tug Life (Jamestown High School), Hamm Squad (York High School), Wrecked Them (Jamestown High School).

 

2013 NIT Tour

Some members of the student section took a tour of Norfolk International Terminals in Norfolk, VA in January and learned about Norfolk's future as a viable container port and how goods are brought into and shipped out of Hampton Roads.  The informative tour took place in the Virginia Port Authority berth control tower and discussed how container ships are smartly loaded/offloaded.

 

2012 Kearsarge Tour

Some members of the student section took a tour of the USS Kearsarge (LHD-3) in December.  While the availability was being worked by a team from Norfolk Naval Shipyard, the Kearsarge was drydocked in NNS' own Dry Dock 2.  The tour allowed the student section to see a ship that they are not accustomed to seeing.

 

2012 Cardboard Boat Regatta

Some members of the student section participated in fellow apprentice club SME's (Society of Manufacturing Engineers) 2012 Cardboard Boat Regatta at Newport News Park.

 

2012 Webb Trip

2012 Boat Design Competition

The Apprentice School Student Section of SNAME hosted their 5th annual SNAME Boat Design Competition in May.  This year's competition scenario challenged teams to design a boat capable of carrying five cinderblocks.  The winning team was The Predator from Jamestown High School.

 

2012 Floating Drydock Tour

Some members of the student section and guests took a tour of the shipyard's own Floating Drydock in April.  The tour took the students around the drydock's docking pier, inside the drydock's machinery room, and through the drydock's surprisingly sophisticated control room.
