  • Technical Investigation into the TITAN Submersible Implosion - IN-PERSON EVENT

    EVENT DESCRIPTION On June 18, 2023 the commercial submersible TITAN imploded while on an expedition to view the TITANIC wreck site. The implosion resulted in the loss of five lives and the initial circumstances of the event were shrouded in confusion, leading to a multiagency search and eventually recovery mission. The tragic incident was investigated by the USCG's Marine Board of Investigation to determine the primary causal factor. LCDR Katie Williams will be presenting on her involvement as a Technical Advisor during the resulting investigation. The presentation will focus on the engineering specific findings of the TITAN implosion as well as high level aspects of marine casualty responses. SPEAKER/PRESENTER LCDR Katie Williams is the Assistant Chief of Inspections Division at Coast Guard Sector San Francisco. Previously, she was the Outer Continental Shelf Branch Chief at the Coast Guard Marine Safety Center. During this assignment, she also served as the engineering lead for the Marine Board of Investigation into the TITAN submersible implosion. In this role she conducted in-depth engineering analyses, participated in salvage missions, and led interviews during the public hearing. LCDR Williams graduated from the United States Coast Guard Academy in 2012 with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering. She also holds two Master of Science degrees—one in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering and the other in Industrial and Operations Engineering—from the University of Michigan. #In-Person
