In a career spanning almost 50 years, this paper will take a look back at the authors’ efforts to contribute to the marine profession both in academia and industry internationally.
Starting as a deckhand/cadet and working through the shipping and shipbuilding industries to finally focus on shipbuilding and coating engineering for the marine and heavy-duty sectors in particular. The paper will review selected key professional achievements that include work in accuracy control, benchmarking and coating engineering as well as contribution to key US and UK naval projects and international regulations related to coatings.
Key lessons for the industry as a whole will be highlighted, based on his experiences acting as an expert witness on a number of key coating related issues (for example, IMO Performance Standard for Protective Coatings in dedicated seawater ballast tanks).
The paper will review key milestones (highs and lows) throughout a long career both before and during time as founder and Managing Director of Safinah Ltd and the factors and individuals that influenced and motivated a career to take on a challenge for which he was ill prepared.Speaker
