Technical Program

1.   Al Horsmon will present a talk - “A Primer on Composites for the Marine Industry”.
This wide-ranging presentation will include material selection, design, manufacturing, details (including foundations), and applications of composites. If you have a curiosity of how lightweight composites work, how they are manufactured and their potential uses, you will enjoy this presentation.

2.   Gerald West and Rich Kulaga from EMD will present the conversion of the EMD 710 engine from diesel fuel to bi-fuel (diesel and natural gas). Our section has been promoting the investigation into the use of natural gas as a marine fuel so this presentation will be both educational and informative.

3.   Dr. Richard Stewart and Carol Wolosz with the Great Lakes Maritime Research Institute (GLMRI) will provide a short update on LNG-related activities underway or recently completed at GLMRI.

4.   Dr. Donn Branstatter, Professor of Biology at the University of Minnesota-Duluth, will make a presentation on “Results of the Ballast Tank Sediment Study: Assessment of the Abundance and Diversity of Resting Stages of Zooplankton in Ballast Sediments of Great Lakes Ships”. Our section sponsored a presentation on ballast water quality almost 5 years ago, so this brings the topic full circle.

Note: On Friday afternoon, September 20th we will be offering a tour of the EMD Natural Gas engine facility in Lagrange, IL (approx. 30 minutes from the Hyatt). Please let us know if you intend to participate in this tour. Direct competitors of EMD will not be permitted on this tour, so those of you who are involved in this part of the industry please take note.
