SPEAKERS/PRESENTERS
Jim Weakley, President of Lake Carriers’ Association, will provide an update and overview on a range of crucial topics pertinent to Great Lakes Shipping. These topics include the latest on ballast water treatment requirements, the current status and funding aspects of the Soo Locks project, developments in icebreaking activities and more.
LCDR Joe Burgess, Assistant Chief, Inspections & Investigations Branch at USCG, will discuss general USCG inspection updates. He will also delve into the use of Li Ion batteries in maritime applications, covering aspects like basic science, current USCG policies, built-in safety components, and general risk management strategies. His presentation will address both large-scale installations for ship service/propulsion and the use of electric vehicles (EVs).
Paul Blomquist, Senior Technical Advisor at the Center for Naval Metalworking and Business Development Director at Maritime Technology EWI, will share insights into what EWI is doing to help shipbuilding and appeal for insight from SNAME on needed technologies and materials upon which EWI should focus in future to provide even more assistance to a desperately needed sector in the US portfolio.
Mayuresh Paradkar with ABSG Consulting Inc. will present on the recent Ship Structure Committee paper, "SSC-476 DESIGN AND PERFORMANCE EVALUATION METHODS FOR CRACK ARRESTOR ENHANCED ALUMINUM MARINE STRUCTURES."
Dr. Thomas McKenney, Associate Professor of Engineering Practice at the University of Michigan, will discuss the maritime decarbonization challenge and his strategy for integrating this topic into his teaching and research activities at the university
