08-04-2010 02:22 PM

The Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers is pleased to join in celebrating the 220th Anniversary of the United States Coast Guard on “Coast Guard day”. The “Revenue Cutter Service” is the predecessor of the U.S. Coast Guard. The name "Coast Guard" was first used in 1915. Dozens of current and former Coast Guard officers and civilian personnel are members of the Society. SNAME Executive Director Erik Seither sent the following message of congratulations to USCG Commandant Admiral Robert Papp yesterday: Admiral Robert Papp USCG Commandant US Coast Guard HQTRS 2100 Second Street, SW Washington, DC 20593-0001 Dear Admiral Papp, On behalf of the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers and the over 8,000 SNAME members, congratulations on the 220th birthday of the United States Coast Guard on 4 August 2010. Throughout your long history, the Coast Guard has provided exemplary service to the Nation. The challenges the Coast Guard face this summer with the Gulf oil disaster is just one example. While this continues as a great challenge, the Coast Guard must also continue the many critical duties to maintain maritime safety, enforce our nation's laws, as well as carry out maritime security operations at home and around the world. We are confident as always SEMPER PARATUS will prevail. I am sure you agree that SNAME and the Coast Guard have common goals – safe, pollution free and effective transportation by water. SNAME is dedicated to advancing the art, the science, the practice of naval architecture, shipbuilding, ocean engineering, and marine engineering and related standards. SNAME stands ready to support the Coast Guard in these endeavors. Again, best wishes to you, your members, and their families on the 220th birthday of the US Coast Guard! Sincerely, Erik W. Seither Executive Director
