SNAME Supports American Towing Tank Conference
SNAME Approves Funding and Leadership Support from the T&R Program
The Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers (SNAME) announced today that is taking a strong support role in the development of the American Towing Tank Conference (ATTC). The ATTC is a triennial conference providing a forum for scientists and engineers to discuss and exchange information and ideas on the state-of-the-art in experimental hydromechanics research.
SNAME support comes in the form of both financial and leadership. The SNAME Executive Committee has approved seed funding to ensure the ATTC’s long-term viability and additional funds to digitize proceedings from previous ATTC conferences to provide an easily available electronic repository for this valuable source of knowledge. The Executive Organizing Committee for ATTC includes SNAME members from government, industry, and academia, and will continue to be supported by the SNAME Technical and Research (T&R) Hydrodynamics Committee, chaired by Christopher Bassler of the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Carderock Division.
SNAME T&R Steering Committee Chair Jaideep Sirkar expressed his view that the ATTC has a place as a vital conference with proactive support an important role for our Society. “The ATTC provides a key opportunity for those in the Western Hemisphere to come together and focus on science and technology developments in the ship hydrodynamics area,” Jaideep said. “The ATTC can also provide a deliberative venue for the Western Hemisphere in preparing for the triennial meetings of the International Towing Tank Conference.” The ITTC assembles the latest thinking around the world and sets standards for use by the industry.
The ATTC is a voluntary association of establishments and universities in the Western Hemisphere that are concerned with the prediction of hydromechanic performance of ships and seagoing vessels from an experimental and theoretical perspective. More information on the conference can be found at http://www.usna.edu/Hydromechanics/ATTC/index.html.
The 29th American Towing Tank Conference (ATTC 2010) will be held in Annapolis, MD at the U.S. Naval Academy’s Hydromechanics Laboratory, August 11-13, 2010. The ATTC was last held in the Washington, D.C. area in 1986 and last held in Annapolis in 1977.
