EVENT DESCRIPTION

Martin Lawrence has spent his life in engineering but in parallel has a deep interest in the actions and activities in World War 2. Looking at things through ‘engineering spectacles’ or sometimes ‘project management spectacles’ has often given a different perspective to some of these and particularly the sinking of HMS Hood led him to question, over many years, the sequence of events and the ‘pinning of blame’ on one extraordinary ‘lucky hit’. By re-examining all the eyewitness accounts and analyzing in detail both the sequence of recorded events and incorporating post-war research on how fire develops and spreads a new theory, that Hood was basically lost to metal fatigue - old age - came about. The loss of HMS Hood, a re-examination concentrating on metal fatigue’ is the subject of this talk.SPEAKER/PRESENTERDr. Martin LawrenceMartin consults with a range of, mostly American, venture capitalists on investment potential, and holds many patents. He has numerous ‘new ideas’ including the ongoing idea of tidal basins about four years ago and realized it needed to be developed as a business plan, not a research project. Previously, he has initiated and developed ideas on precision angle measurement (used to measure shock impact on large wing structures), a sensor that was developed and is still in use by NATO, pointing stabilization for cameras in orbiting satellites, optical measurement equipment for use in highly hostile RF environments, etc. His other interests include British industrial history, policy, and future directions, and on the origins and evolution of the Second World War.
