Hull Air Lubrication: The Impact on Ship Efficiency and Global Decarbonisation

Registration will close end of the day on December 5.

Air lubrication fundamentally changes the interaction between water and a vessel’s hull, shearing air from air release units in the hull to create a carpet of microbubbles that coats the full flat bottom of a vessel. As a result, frictional resistance is decreased – dramatically reducing fuel consumption and associated emissions.

David Connolly, Chief Technologist at Silverstream Technologies, the market leader in air lubrication technology, will discuss the opportunities and challenges of applying the system to newbuild and retrofit vessels across the global fleet, as the industry searches for viable decarbonization solutions.

David joined Silverstream in 2017 and currently holds the position of Chief Technologist. He leads on all technical aspects of technology delivery and development including innovation projects under a broad agenda including Silverstream’s Smart Data initiative. He is responsible for developing key strategic partnerships with external organisations including Universities and Research institutes. In addition, David is a key part of the strategic thought pool within the Company, bolstering capabilities in terms of project management and technical execution.

From a career spanning more than 30 years in the maritime industry, he retains a wealth of experience in delivering innovative technologies, transformation programmes, data management and performance analysis, Ship Design, Ship Construction, Modification and Repair. He has an extensive record in leading multi-disciplinary engineering teams in the most complex projects within the Defence and Commercial Shipping sectors.
