Eric Schneider & Brian Polagye will present
The Admiralty Inlet Pilot Tidal Energy Demonstration Project

Eric Schneider from the Snohomish Public Utility District and Dr. Brian Polagye from the University of Washington’s Northwest National Marine Renewable Energy Center will deliver a presentation on the planned tidal energy array proposed for installation off Admiralty Head, Puget Sound. The presentation will include an overview of project objectives and proposed installation operations. Dr. Polagye will then discuss his team’s role in the developing environmental monitoring technology and study plans required in the project’s FERC operating license. The successful execution of these plans will dramatically improve our understanding of the environmental changes caused by tidal energy generation and the role tidal energy can play in our energy future.

Eric Schneider, PE received his BS in civil engineering from Washington State University in 1993. He joined Snohomish PUD in 2006, where he is now the construction lead for the Admiralty Inlet tidal energy project.

Brian Polagye, PhD received his BS in mechanical engineering from Princeton University in 2000 and his MS and PhD in mechanical engineering from the University of Washington in 2005 and 2009 respectively. He is an assistant professor at the UW; his focus is tidal energy.

UNOLS (University—National Oceanographic Laboratory System), and are part of the effort
to replace an aging fleet.

As the Chairman of Guido Perla & Associates (GPA), and a University of Michigan graduate
with more than 40 years in the shipbuilding industry, Guido Perla brings unique insight into
the development of the AGOR project.

SNAME PNW March Technical Meeting

SNAME PNW March Technical Meeting

Join SNAME PNW as we host Mr. Thomas Lamb to present Shipbuilding Productivity and its Measurement. An excerpt from the paper's abstract:

"Shipbuilding productivity is an important factor in determining the competitiveness of a shipbuilder. Today most shipbuilders in the world use an approach to measure productivity that was developed by the British in the 1960's. Today, with most shipbuilders utilizing subcontracted labor and extensive subcontracting of fully outfitted structural blocks, it is very difficult to determine the correct output and input provided by the shipbuilder. It also diminishes the importance and usefulness of the metric for the continuing comparison of shipbuilders and shipbuilding areas and countries. Based on this it is perhaps time to consider a new approach utilizing only the value added to the ship by the shipbuilder and the financial input by the shipbuilder to achieve it."

SNAME PNW - February 11: Seattle Technical Meeting Notice

SNAME Technical Meeting

  Taylor Herinckx will present on:

Floating Surface Collectors:
Improving Downstream Passage of Juvenile Fish

Migratory fish passage past hydroelectric dams has been an environmental concern for

collectors. Taylor Herinckx will discuss the function and design aspects of two types of
collectors: the pair for Baker Lake and Lake Shannon, and the collector for Lake Cushman.

Taylor Herinckx graduated from the Webb Institute in 2006 and has since served as a naval
architect and electrical engineer for Elliott Bay Design Group.
