Years in the making, Jim Cole's recently completed book offers a comprehensive look at the design and construction of vessels that have fished the Pacific Northwest since the first people, throughout the evolution to the modern day fleet. Join us as he shares his extensive research, and meticulous hand-drawn illustrations and paintings.

Having worked at many of the design firms and shipyards in the Seattle/Tacoma area, Jim has built an impressive career in the maritime industry. His lifetime avocation has been studying and preserving its history. He is a Fellow of SNAME, and a talented local artist.

Naval Ship Acquisition Strategies for Developing Countries

Join SNAME as they host Mr. Thomas Lamb to present Naval Ship Acquisition Strategies for Developing Countries. Mr. Lamb has over 50 years of experience in the international shipbuilding industry in the areas of ship design, engineering management, estimating, planning, shipbuilding process analysis, ship production and productivity, research and education. His areas of specialization are ship design, design for production. CAD/CAM, design/production integration, shipyard layout and shipbuilding productivity. Elected a fellow of SNAME in 1991, Mr. Lamb has presented several award winning papers and was the Editor of Ship Design and Construction.

A Pair of Award Winning University Ship Designs

and

America's Cup - Advances in Sailboat Design

Join SNAME and CIMarE as they host recent graduates from the University of British Columbia to present two ship design projects completed over the 2012-2013 school year. The first, Concept Design of a Multi-Purpose Shallow Draft Buoy tender for the Canadian Coast Guard, was honoured by SNAME and ASNE with the Dr. James A. Lisnyk Design Competition Award. The second, An Innovative Design for a Safe and Affordable Ferry for Bangladesh, was awarded 1st Place in the 2013 edition of the Worldwide Ferry Safety Association’s annual student competition for the design of ferries for developing nations.

The dinner presentation, by Dan McGreer from STX Canada Marine, will discuss the recent technological innovations in sailboat design, with an emphasis on the America’s Cup.

I’m pleased to inform you that our Annual Joint CIMarE / SNAME Meeting will take place on Saturday the 22nd of June. This event is made possible by the efforts of BC Ferries and Point Hope.

 LCDR Eben H. Philips will present on:
 U.S. Coast Guard Cutter POLAR STAR:  A Journey back to Mission Ready Status

A few years ago it was questionable whether the POLAR STAR, a 399’ icebreaker, would ever return to ice-filled waters. Today, after a three year maintenance period, including $67M in contracted services, she is back at Pier 36, ready to serve as America’s only active Antarctic icebreaker. LCDR Eben Philips will talk about the decision to renovate POLAR STAR, maintenance items that have been completed, and the months of commissioning and operational training required after years of inactive service. 

LCDR Phillips served as the POLAR STAR’s Chief Engineer and currently serves as the cutter’s Port Engineer here in Seattle, WA.

Due to budget pressure, ship owners are seeking ways to reduce fuel cost and meet emission requirements. This is especially true of ferry operators due to their continuous operation near land. SNAME PNW Annual Student Meeting

Students from Oregon State University, University of British Columbia, University of Washington, and Webb Institute will give presentations about their research projects and student design team projects. This is a great opportunity for members to find out about ongoing marine related research at our local universities and to meet the student members of SNAME. We will also have two keynote presentations:  Dr. Solomon Yim will present on the "Physical and Numerical Modeling of Large-Scale Experiments at the OSU Hinsdale Wave Research Laboratory" and Prof. Stephen Duff from University of Oregon will present an overview of the “SALTS New Schooner Project and Integration of Design.” A catered lunch will be provided on Saturday. We will be touring the Laboratory on Friday January 25, 2013 at 3pm.

SNAME PNW Young Professionals Event


You are invited to join SNAME Pacific Northwest’s Young Professionals as we tour both Allied Shipbuilders Ltd. and Parallel 49 Brewing Co. Established in 1948, Allied Shipbuilders serves the commercial marine industry on the west coast of British Columbia and has complete facilities for on-site ship repair, maintenance and modifications to steel, aluminum and wooden vessels. The tour will take us through the shops, both dry docks and onto the CCGS Tanu which is currently at Allied for refit. Following the shipyard tour, please join us at Parallel 49 Brewing Co. to socialize and learn a little bit more about the treat we all enjoy, beer! The tour includes a behind the scenes look into the brewing facility and a tasting paddle featuring four beers.
