Fatigue Damage Estimation and Prediction Using Vessel-Specific Wave Conditions

When:  Aug 24, 2021 from 12:30 PM to 01:30 PM (CT)
Associated with  Texas Section

We are back to in-person meetings!
This is a hybrid event with both in-person and webinar options.

Lunch starts at 11:30 PM CT. Presentation starts at 12:30 PM CT.

DESCRIPTION:

Historical evidence has shown that fatigue damage is one of the dominant failure mechanisms of ocean-going vessels. Accurate fatigue assessment is critical for decision making regarding structural inspection and maintenance planning, future operations and potential life extension.

This presentation proposes a methodology for vessel-specific wave induced fatigue damage estimation and prediction based on Spectral-Based Fatigue Analysis (SFA) and Monte Carlo simulation (MCS). The impact of the vessel-specific wave conditions on the vessel’s fatigue damage is characterized by a relative value to the fatigue damage estimation using unrestricted service wave conditions. The relative fatigue damage can be used as an indicator to characterize the ship’s actual consumed fatigue life. For the remaining fatigue life prediction, MCS is conducted with consideration of both historical vessel-experienced waves and the wave conditions for unrestricted services. This predicts the mean and 95% confidence interval of future fatigue damage.

A container ship trading on the Asia-North Europe and Asia-North America routes is selected as a case study. Results show that, compared with the North Atlantic unrestricted service wave conditions, the actual fatigue damage using experienced wave conditions is significantly reduced for the selected typical structural connections. The continuous and vessel-specific fatigue damage accumulation awareness and prediction will benefit owners, operators, and Class Societies to provide inputs for operations and guide future inspection and survey planning with enhanced vessel safety and readiness.
