EVENT DESCRIPTION
Join us Online for a Technical Presentation from Dr. Kai Yu on the Computational Fluid Dynamics of Ammonia Dispersion within an Engine Room on board a vessel.
The IMO commits to reducing CO2 emissions per transport work by at least 40% by 2030, pursuing efforts towards 70% by 2050. Ammonia's potential to aid in shipping's decarbonization goals is becoming more widely acknowledged. However, in most cases, toxicity to humans is the main issue. In this presentation, the assessment of ammonia distribution in an engine room will be quantified with the use of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) techniques. The ammonia concentration levels in CFD simulation results illustrate the toxicity zones for several leaking scenarios.
SPEAKER/PRESENTER
Dr. Kai Yu joined American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) in 2009. Now, he is Principal Engineer in the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) group of the Technology Department. Prior to ABS, He was a naval architect at Aker solution US, Inc. Dr. Yu has a Ph.D. in Ocean Engineering from Texas A&M University.
