Maggie Nate joined Gibbs & Cox in 2017 as a Survivability Engineer and temporarily relocated from Northern Virginia to Halifax, Nova Scotia with her family in order to provide on-site support for Canadian naval programs.  When she returns to Virginia at the end of the year, Maggie will transition into the role of Department Manager for Survivability.  Prior to joining the Gibbs team, Maggie had a variety of naval platform assignments in the areas of Survivability and Test and Evaluation for various countries including serving as a Senior Test Engineer providing LFT&E support to PMS377, the amphibious warfare program office.  Originally an aerospace engineer, she has also previously worked with NASA Langley supporting Human Factors Integration and AAI Corporation on the Shadow unmanned aerial vehicle program.   

Maggie is a born and raised Virginian having grown up in Newport News and attended college in Blacksburg before settling in the Alexandria area.  Outside of work, Maggie is active in both the Chesapeake and Canadian Atlantic Sections of SNAME and serves on the editorial board for (mt) Magazine and the Journal of Ship Production and Design.  In her spare time, Maggie enjoys triple integrals in spherical coordinates, taking keelboat sailing lessons with her husband (Justin), and cheering on the Hokies every chance she gets.

The medal will be for "notable early career achievement by a young maritime or ocean professional." The title will be "The Francis T. Bowles Medal." The medal will be made of gold-plated bronze, one side to show likeness of Francis T. Bowles, the other side to show an inscription of award. Eligibility for the medal, as of March 31st of the year awarded the nominee must have a minimal of five contiguous years as an Associate or Full Member, concurrent to time of nomination and meet the age limit of 35 as of March 31st of the award year. Volunteer service will be considered as a positive factor, but not required. Anyone may nominate. The selection of the nominee for the medal shall be made by the Awards Committee of SNAME requiring two-thirds vote.  Notification of the award will be made following approval and the medal will be presented with suitable ceremonies at the Annual Meeting or at such time as the President of the Society may arrange. The medal may be awarded annually but not more often.
