  Student Steering Committee 2008-2009
The volunteer leadership of the SNAME Student Steering Committee (SSC) is honored this month for their tireless efforts and service to their fellow students and all members of SNAME.

Dr. Richard Boutwell, Faculty Advisor & Founder
"Dr. B" has led the SSC since its inception.  He has a PhD in Congnitive Psychology from Brigham Young University, and is a life-long advocate for the importance of education in human growth and development.   Dr. Boutwell serves as the Training Manager for Northrop Grumman Newport News, where he founded and remains the driving force behind the Apprentice School and the SNAME Boat Building Competition.

Gil Romano, Chair
A recent graduate of the University of New Orleans, Gil began work in August with the Center for Innovation in Ship Design (CISD) at the Naval Surface Warfare Center - Carderock Division.  As Chair of the SSC, Gil worked with the student section officers to promote student involvement and communication between and within the student sections.  Over the past year, he opened the door for students to become involved in SNAMEs T&R Programs and guided one of the best attended SSC student programs ever.

Morgan Parker, Vice Chair
Morgan is currently a graduate student at the University of Michigan.  As a pre-candidate for a PhD in naval architecture, hs is perhaps SNAME's longest-tenured student member.   Having enjoyed his volunteer experiences to date, Morgan is excited about the future of SNAME, and looks forward to continuing to give back along the way.

Jacob Genauer, Secretary & Treasurer
Jake is currently a senior at Webb Institute, where he serves as Webb’s Honor Council Chairman.  In between his classes, Jake has spent work terms at five maritime companies across the country and in Europe. This winter, he will do ship repairs at Detyens Shipyard in Charleston, SC.

Gaston Doucet, Communicatons Chair
Gaston is a native of Lafayette, LA, and is currently a senior at the University of New Orleans and is an Engineering Intern with New Orleans-based Bollinger Shipyards.

Eric Giesberg, Electronic Media Chair
Eric, a Texan, is currently a senior at Stevens Institute.  His interests include ultimate frisbee, cooking, film, and the unique sounds of such bands as Tool, Cream, and Fatboy Slim.

2008-2009 SSC Officers

The 2008-2009 Student Steering Committee spearheaded advanced student involvement in SNAME throughout their terms in office, which expire at the end of December.  Their leadership paid real dividends in the many areas, especially increased student membership, enhanced retention efforts, and the very successful student programs at both the Annual Meeting and in individual sections.  Their time and effort at their own schools and with SNAME staff has increased student involvement in SNAME around the world. Alana Anderson sums it up: "They are FABULOUS!".

Thank you to this year's SSC and best wishes for continued success.  All of SNAME looks forward to their efforts being continued by the incoming officers, who will head the SSC as of January 1, 2010.
