The Pelican State was christened May 30, 2009, and delivered June15, eight months ahead of schedule.
Like her sister ships, the Golden State, and Empire State, the Pelican State is a Jones Act product carrier.
The ships are 600 feet long with a capacity of 331,000 barrels.

Shown in the background are two other NASSCO built ships, The dry cargo and ammunition ship USNS Carl Brashear (T-AKE 7), launched and christened on September 18, 2008 and The USNS Mercy (T-AH 19). Mercy is a converted San Clemente class tanker, redesigned as a 1,000 bed hospital ship, christened in 1985 and continues to serve today.
