The volunteer leadership of the SNAME Student Steering Committee (SSC) is honored this month for their tireless efforts and service to their fellow students and all members of SNAME.
Dr. Richard Boutwell, Faculty Advisor & Founder
"Dr. B" has led the SSC since its inception. He has a PhD in Congnitive Psychology from Brigham Young University, and is a life-long advocate for the importance of education in human growth and development. Dr. Boutwell serves as the Training Manager for Northrop Grumman Newport News, where he founded and remains the driving force behind the Apprentice School and the SNAME Boat Building Competition.
Doug Rigterink, Chair
Douglas Rigterink is currently a senior at the University of Michigan and will be graduating in May 2010. The son of two former Navy JAG officers, his interest in ships and naval architecture began at an early age. Doug primarily grew up outside of Washington, DC in Glenmont, MD but also spent time in St. Louis, MO, Rochester, NY, Coudersport, PA, and Charlotte, NC. During high school, Doug earned the rank of Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts of America and was the unit commander for his high school's Navy Junior ROTC program. While at Michigan, he has served as the Steward of their SNAME Student Section. He currently works part-time as a research assistant in Michigan's Department of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering. He has interned at Bruce S. Rosenblatt and Associates in their Oakland Office, the Center for Innovation in Ship Design at the Naval Surface Warfare Center in Carderock, MD, and Hyundai Heavy Industries in Ulsan in the Republic of Korea. Outside of school, Doug enjoys going to concerts, traveling, and playing ice hockey and lacrosse. As Chair of the Student Steering Committee, Doug would like to build on the work of the past committees and increase student involvement in SNAME. He would also like to increase interaction between individual student sections.
Vanna Keller, Vice Chair
Vanna Keller graduated in 2009 from Texas A&M University with a B.S. in Ocean Engineering and soon after headed to the topics where she is currently pursuing a Master's degree at the University of Hawaii researching ocean wave energy. As SSC Vice Chair, her goals include working to increase the involvement and communication from all 26 SNAME student sections, designing the best student design competition to date and supporting the other SSC officers, student sections, and SNAME national in any way possible. She looks forward to the challenges ahead and has no doubt the 2010 SSC will make great strides and accomplish great things.
Marc Woolliscroft, Secretary & Treasurer
Marc Woolliscroft will be graduating from the University of Michigan in May 2010. Prior to becoming the secretary/treasurer for the Student Steering Committee, he was the treasurer for his student section. Having never been familiar with naval architecture and marine engineering, he has enjoyed acquiring new knowledge of the field throughout college. For the past two summers he has been employed with Atlantic Marine in Jacksonville, FL and VT Halter Marine in Pascagoula, MS as an intern. While acting as secretary/treasurer for the SSC, he is focused on organizing a successful student job fair at the SNAME Annual Conference. For hobbies, Marc enjoys fishing, playing and watching football, and woodworking.
Noble Davidson, Communicatons Chair
Noble Davidson is a Naval Architecture student at SUNY Martime College. Prior to becoming the Communications Chair of the SSC he was the treasurer for his student section, and is currently the chair. He grew up in the recreational boating industry on the shoreline of Connecticut; and from this experience, decided to pursue naval architecture as a career. His primary interest is in small boat design, but he has developed a greater appreciation for ship design during his time at Maritime College. He is currently working as a summer intern for General Dynamics- Electric Boat in Groton, CT; and will be graduating in December 2011.
Nathan Hagan, Electronic Media Chair
Nathan Hagan, a member of the class of 2012 at Webb Institute in Glen Cove, New York, has been involved in SNAME since his senior year in high school. Prior to joining the Student Steering Committee as the Electronics Media Chair, he served as the secretary/treasurer of his local student section, as well as serving as a student leader in the development of the SEAPerch Underwater Robotics Program, a student competition hosted by SNAME and sponsored by the Office of Naval Research. Nathan also serves currently as the Chairman of his local student section at Webb Institute, and helps run two SEAPerch competitions along the east coast, one in Virginia, and one in New York. Nathan is currently employed by the Naval Surface Warfare Center at Carderock Division in West Bethesda Maryland. Nathan is very excited to bring his years of web/graphics experience to his role on the SSC, and reminds all student sections that if they need any assistance not to hesitate to send him an email.
The 2009-2010 Student Steering Committee
spearheaded advanced student involvement in SNAME throughout their terms in office, which expire at the end of December. Their leadership paid real dividends in the many areas, especially increased student membership, enhanced student section microsites, and the very successful student programs at both the Annual Meeting and in individual sections. Their time and effort at their own schools and with SNAME staff has increased student involvement in SNAME around the world. Alana Anderson sums it up: "They are FABULOUS!".
Thank you to this year's SSC and best wishes for continued success. All of SNAME looks forward to their efforts being continued by the incoming officers, who will head the SSC as of January 1, 2011.
