Dr. Walter Maclean

Dr. Walter M. Maclean graduated from the USMMA on May 18, 1945, and sailed in various steam and motor ship engineering positions in trans-Pacific and Around-the-World services until 1952.  He returned to school at the University of California, Berkeley in 1953, graduating in 1956, also working as a stationary engineer and consulting office draftsman. 

While working as a consulting engineer he continued graduate studies, receiving his Master of Engineering degree in 1957 and also engaging in the Boulder Victory thermal stress research and naval vessel Underway Replenishing exercises.  In 1959 he became engaged in ship structures research at the U.C. College of Engineering, becoming qualified for doctoral studies in 1960.

In 1965, Dr. Maclean joined the Webb Institute faculty, teaching undergraduate and graduate structural mechanics courses and participating in research under Edward V. Lewis.  He joined the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy faculty in 1972 as Department of Engineering Head, and in 1975 took a position as Manager, Requirements Development Laboratory at the National Maritime Research Center, also becoming a MARAD member of the Ships Structure Subcommittee of the Interagency Ships Structure Committee, returning to the academy again in 1987 to teach naval architecture, ship structure design and other engineering subjects until his 1995 retirement.  He was awarded the Webb Medal in 1999.


Dr. Walter M. Maclean first joined SNAME as a student member in 1955.  While serving on the faculty at Webb Institute in Glen Cove, NY, he joined the New York Metropolitan Section Membership Committee and has been actively engaged in Society committee work ever since.
