John joined SNAME when he was a student at Webb Institute. “I quickly realized that SNAME was the hub of all the technologies and professionals that comprise the marine industry.” Throughout a diverse career spanning ship design, shipbuilding and marine R&D – supporting both naval and commercial interests – and working on the Atlantic, Pacific and Gulf Coasts – John recognizes that one constant has been the relevance and benefit of participating in SNAME. “The Society has always been the ‘go to’ place for state-of-the-art technology to address any professional need in this business. And whenever I’ve needed specialized expertise, I call upon the renowned authorities I’ve met through involvement in SNAME’s Technical & Research program, or by networking at the SNAME Annual Meeting, symposia and local Section meetings.”
After earning his BS in NA & ME, John began his career as a naval architect with Litton Industries’ Advanced Marine Technology Division in California and Ingalls Shipbuilding Division in Mississippi. He then moved to the Washington DC area where he worked for several ship design agents and research/engineering contractors over an 18-year period. He was the lead naval architect for five ship design projects, was granted a patent as co-inventor of an innovative drydock concept, and presented a SNAME Annual Meeting paper on the effects of hull roughness and fouling on ship performance and economics. In 1991 he relocated to San Diego, where he worked at NASSCO as an engineering manager, proposal manager, and technology development manager. He started his independent consulting practice in 2000. As a SNAME Regional Vice President for the past three years, John has been responsible for the revitalization of SNAME’s presence in Hawaii, including a mentoring role in the recent re-start of the SNAME Student Section at the University of Hawaii at Manoa.
John and his wife, Amy, enjoy living in Southern California, but travel frequently and try to explore at least one new destination every year. In addition to his volunteer work for SNAME, John serves on the Webb Institute Board of Trustees, the Webb Alumni Association Executive Committee, and the ASNE Scholarship Committee.
