Mike Corl
14-year SNAME Member

LCDR Michael Corl graduated from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in May of 1995 with a degree in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering. Upon graduation, he was assigned as an Engineer Officer in Training to USCGC RUSH, a 378' high endurance cutter stationed in Honolulu, HI where he served as the Auxiliary Division Officer and the Assistant Engineer Officer.

In 1997, Mike was selected for post graduate study in Naval Architecture/Marine Engineering, and achieved a Masters of Science Engineering at the University of Michigan in Naval Architecture/Marine Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. While at the University of Michigan, Mike, designed a JUNIPER based icebreaking buoy tender and submitted the work as an alternative for the replacement of CGC MACKINAW. In the summer of 2005, he began a two year PhD Leave at the University of Michigan. In June of 2007, Mike successfully defended his PhD Dissertation in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering. His research is titled “Methodology for Optimizing Commonality Decisions in Multiple Classes of Ships”.

Mike is currently assigned to the U.S. Coast Guard Academy as an Assistant Professor in the Naval Architecture & Marine Engineering section. Since being assigned to the teaching staff, he has taught Statics and Engineering Design, Dynamics, Fluid Mechanics, Experimental Methods in Fluids and Thermal Systems, Ship Stability, Ships and Maritime Systems, Ship Propulsion Design, Principles of Ship Design and Ship Design/System Integration. In addition to his teaching duties, Mike has served as the Advisor for the Class of 2004 and is currently the Advisor for the Cadet Running Club. During the summer of 2008, LCDR Corl sailed on board the Coast Guard Cutter EAGLE as the Engineering Training Officer.
